In 1994, Charmaine became the first Black woman to serve as president and CEO of United Way of Greater St. Louis. She took the city by storm and changed how the St. Louis region participates in philanthropy. She lost her battle to cancer in 2001, but her legacy of compassion and humility endures in the community.
